The Municipal Library, founded in 1780 by Maria Theresa of Austriae and named after her, is distinguished by the particular value of its ancient heritage that makes it one of the main Italian historical libraries. It contains valuable works related to the history of the city and the Mantuan territory, such as manuscripts, incunabula, letters and prints. In addition, the most important Jewish Kabbalistic set of documents of the world is here preserved. The imposing reading rooms were built to a design by Paolo Pozzo.
