When people hear ‘Garda’, they think of the lake. But let's not forget the lake’s surroundings: a green crown of beautiful hills, overhanging cliffs and a series of valleys and mountains in iridescent hues.
The Alto Garda Bresciano Regional Park is the largest protected natural area. A natural paradise that stretches from the lake, from Salò to Limone, across the entire Valvestino valley to its borders with Trentino and Valle Sabbia.
Established by the Lombardy Region in 1989, it comprises nine municipalities and covers an area of 38 thousand hectares (55 thousand football fields). While the coastal zones are established tourist areas, all you have to do is take any road from Gargnano, Salò or Limone, and after a couple of hairpin turns towards the interior the landscape changes completely: the lake is different, the horizons are wider and you discover a hundred details that you simply cannot imagine from down below.
In the park, nature sets the rhythm and shapes the landscape. For example, the spectacular cliffs overlooking the lake at Tremosine: a coffee on the terrace at the Terrazza del Brivido, perched 350 metres above the lake; the winding Strada della Forra by bicycle or motorbike.
The park is an immense botanical garden: here you will discover the spectacular blooms of the rare Saxifraga tombeanensis (found on the cliffs of Monte Tombea, between 900 and 2,300 m); orchids in May-June along the ‘Sentiero delle Orchidee’ (‘Orchid Path’), which winds through the Magasa pastures; the humble Fagiolo della Valvestino bean, a local delicacy which bears fiery red flowers from May to July.
The coastal villages have hotels, lights, and shops; Magasa and Valvestino are the smallest municipalities in the entire province, with shepherd’s huts, alpine pastures and the Monte Caplone mountain, towering at 1,976 metres.
With the help of expert guides, hikers can encounter various animals: deer, ibex (at higher altitudes), capercaillies, owls and other alpine and Mediterranean species.
Cyclists, mountain enthusiasts, hikers, motorcyclists, school groups: everyone finds the park the ideal place for an unforgettable experience.
